Despite being toys, Legos inspire amazing creations. LEGO artists make use of the tiny plastic bricks to create everything from robots to architecture. Even the engineers of the company design new elements to allow builders to construct more complex models. Erik Varszegi is a Master Builder at the Lego Group, Billund, Denmark. He designed a brand new element for this year, the curved slope. It allows Lego users to create more slanted forms, while adhering the strict color palette of the company. The slopes can also be used to create more dynamic shapes such as an incline staircase.
While certain Lego designs are the creations of professional designers, others are the result of the well-known Lego Ideas set-design program. The Ideas line offers anyone the chance to create a set and get it manufactured, and offers fame and a percent of sales to any designer who can convince 10,000 of their peers that their design is worthy of being go into production. It’s not a surprise that the most extravagant and impressive sets are the ones that receive the most attention, especially when they feature iconic characters or scenes from films or television shows, or in real life.
